Matt is an accomplished trial and appellate lawyer with over a decade of experience advocating on behalf of his clients. Matt also is the Chair of Minden Gross LLP's Cannabis Law Group where he provides regulatory and business advice as well as advocacy guidance to clients with respect to the medicinal and recreational cannabis industries in Canada.

Within his litigation practice, Matt has developed a particular expertise litigating disputes within the real estate industry. He is frequently sought out by developers, owners, brokers, agents, property investors, landlords, commercial tenants and contractors to advance their business interests in high stakes litigation.

Matt was selected by Real Estate Professional Magazine as one of its Young Guns for 2015. He was the only lawyer selected in the Canada-wide list of the real estate industry’s top 100 movers and shakers under the age of 35 for having demonstrated himself to have performed exceptionally in his practice.

Over the years Matt has developed considerable expertise in extraordinary remedies such as injunctions, freezing orders, construction liens and certificates of pending litigation.

On the regulatory side of his practice, Matt has developed expertise under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations, and more recently the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations, which enables him to provide advice to a wide range of industry stakeholders including commercial producers and the owners of businesses that provide ancillary services to producers. Matt is able to assist corporations through the producer licensing application process and, once successful, help them navigate the complex administrative regulatory framework to ensure compliance with the legislation.

Given the Canadian Federal Government’s commitment to legalize and regulate cannabis, Matt also devotes a substantial amount of time staying abreast of current legal and policy developments that impact the recreational market.  Matt provides advice to existing business owners as well as entrepreneurs with start-up aspirations, including foreign companies wishing to enter the Canadian marketplace, and assists them in preparing for the pending legalization of the recreational market.

Matt’s talents are recognized by his peers within the legal community. As an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Toronto Lawyers Association, Matt is responsible for the governance of the organization, which has over 3,500 members. Matt also sits as a designate on the Ontario Bar Association Provincial Council and in that role is responsible for, among other things, electing the Board of Directors of the OBA.

Matt is a regular contributor to print and online media publications on issues pertaining to legal developments within the cannabis industry as well as real estate disputes and issues affecting the practice of law and access to justice. Matt sits on the Editorial Board of the Cannabis Law Journal, frequently publishes articles on his blog Canada Cannabis Legal, and regularly contributes articles to
